By the time winter arrives, the last thing most of us want to do is spend a weekend cleaning our mattresses. I’m not surprised, after all, the first thing that pops in your mind when you think of it is stench caused by mattress cleaning solutions. Obviously, it is freezing cold outside so opening the windows to let in the fresh air is not an option. Well you might want to rethink that. Mid December is the best time for mattress cleaning. The reason is simple – you should do it when you definitely do not want to go outside. Plus you don’t have to use stinky chemicals. There’s a green cleaning alternative and it’s surprisingly simple.
Before starting, I sought advice (i.e. I wanted to double check my theory) from the only person in the world who knows more about mattress cleaning than me. I’m talking about my wife.
Ready, set go!
- Remove your mattress covers. Wash them in a washing machine. Any detergent will do, so my advice – do not waste your time looking for a brand name.
- Sprinkle the baking soda lightly over the mattress and let it sit for an hour or two. Just like with cleaning your carpet, if your mattress is smelly leave the baking soda sit for 12 hours.
- Thoroughly vacuum your mattress and voila! Not only will it smell fresh it will be as clean as it was the first day you bought it.
Do you like winter cleaning, or does it just annoy you? Let me hear your thoughts.
